Overgrown nails force a dog's toes into an unnatural position, which stresses the joints and spine over time. Long nails can split, crack, and curl — creating pain and opening the door to infection. Regular trims every 3–6 weeks prevent all of this and keep your dog walking comfortably. Louisville's active dogs especially need consistent nail care to handle pavement and trails without injury.

Brandy's offers both standard nail clipping and Dremel rotary grinding — and we'll recommend the right approach for your dog based on nail color, temperament, and past experience with nail care. Both methods are available as walk-in services or as part of a full grooming appointment.
Many dogs have had a nail quicked at home or at a previous salon — and that one bad experience can turn every future nail trim into a struggle. Brandy's uses a structured approach that starts slowly, uses positive reinforcement throughout, and never forces a dog through the process.
We handle and massage the paws before any tool comes near — teaching the dog that touching is safe.
Treats and praise are used throughout. We trim a few nails, pause, reward, then continue at the dog's pace.
Severely nail-shy dogs can do partial sessions over multiple visits — building tolerance gradually over time.
How often your dog needs nail trims depends mostly on activity level and the surfaces they walk on. Active dogs that walk on pavement daily self-file their nails naturally and need less frequent trimming. Indoor dogs and seniors grow nails faster in proportion to their wear. Here's a quick guide based on the three most common lifestyles in Louisville.
Nails still grow quickly on active dogs — pavement wears the tips but not the sides. Regular trims prevent uneven nail growth and splitting.
Labs, German Shepherds, sporting breeds, trail dogs
Most pet dogs fall into this range — regular walks with some indoor time. Nails grow steadily and need routine maintenance to stay comfortable.
Mixed breeds, family pets, most medium-size dogs
Low-activity dogs get less natural wear and may need trims less urgently, but seniors should be checked every 6 weeks — long nails affect their already-stressed joints significantly.
Senior dogs, toy breeds, mostly-indoor dogs
Walk-in nail trims are $12–18 at Brandy's, depending on dog size. Grinding (Dremel) costs slightly more: $18–25. Nail trimming is included in all full-grooming packages. No appointment needed for nail-only visits during open hours.
Clipping uses traditional scissor-style nail clippers to cut the nail to the desired length — fast and effective for most dogs. Grinding uses a rotary Dremel tool to gradually file the nail, producing a smoother edge and less shock to the quick. Grinding is ideal for dogs reactive to clippers or those with dark nails where the quick is hard to see.
Yes. Trimming black nails safely requires experience with the quick's location, which isn't visible in dark nails. We use a gradual, conservative trim technique with good lighting to stay clear of the quick. We'd rather take a little less off and have your dog comfortable than cause a painful quick nick.
Absolutely. We work with nail-sensitive and anxious dogs regularly. We use desensitization techniques, go slowly, and take breaks when needed. Some dogs benefit from a "multiple short session" approach — just a few nails at a time — to build tolerance over several visits.
Yes. We include dewclaw trimming in every nail appointment at no extra charge. Dewclaws can overgrow and curl into the skin if neglected, so we always check and trim them as part of the service.
